We had help from outside the club (denoted by an *), from our venue host, Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program… and from other individuals who care about the effort to give new drivers a better chance to survive.

Registration was manned… errr, wo-manned… by Diane Ona, Carmina Nicasio and Jackie Douglass. We would have starved without Joyce Sharp and Sharon Rachow… okay and DeArmond for bagels and coffee first thing.

The course workers kept the flow going: John Strom, Ed Smith, Art Ona, Duane Meyer*… plus some parental help.

Fred Watson was a moving target as the event photographer.

   1. We have 2 new members this month

   1. The Sky Tavern Kars for Kids (BMW non-event) is this coming Sunday 9/13
      1. There is a $1000 price for the most cars by a car club. Everyone is encouraged to come to the event. If we win, the money will go to the Holiday Party..
      2. Admission is $25 per car which includes a lunch.
   2. De Sharp said there are 15 cars that have signed up for the Sierra Wine Tour. The fire in Jackson may be a problem but we are tracking. There is a cost of $12 for the box lunch which needs to be paid prior to attending the event.
   3. Jeff Warner gave an update on the Street Survival on October 3rd. It looks like only 10 students are attending so far. Please sign up to volunteer.
   4. The Fun Rally will be on October 31st. Carol Villar will put on an eVite with all the details. Steve Polimeni is the sponsor and he has put together a very fun event.
3. BMW takes 3 categories in the J D Powers Initial Quality Study.
   1. The 3 series, 4 series and 5 series BMW’s won quality awards from J D Powers.
   2. Overall, BMW ranked 6th out of all car brands.
   3. BMW’s manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, South Africa won the Platinum Plant award for quality as well.
4. A video of the BMW Welt was shown which highlighted the many facets of the facility.
5. BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept Car was presented. It was made to celebrate the original 3.0 CSL.
   1. The yellow color of the car is new and called Golf Yellow.
   2. The CSL was shown at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este at Lake Como, Italy
6. BMW Future Product Pipeline was shown to all members. The list was all BMW models that were going thru design changes in the next few years.
7. The Rennsport Tech Session was attended by three BMW members and 14 Porsche members. It was very entertaining learning about the process of diagnosing German Cars with the latest in computer technology.
8. The Potluck at the McGoff Residence set another record. 44 members showed up for the event. There is a problem with signing up for events that was evident at the Potluck. We only had 28 signed up just two days prior to the party. Pat McGoff said the there is a new system of inviting people but members must respond so we know who is coming. Members should check their Junk and Trash on their computer if they are not getting invites. Also call one of the board members if you can’t register for an event.
9. Jeff Warner brought is 2000 M5 for everyone to see. Jeff had it showcased in front of the sales area. Very nice looking M5.

12. Dinner @ La Vecchia Italian Bistro. Alberto, the owner was not pleased that only 8 or 9 showed up for the March dinner. He wants a minimum of 15 for dinner. We have 16 coming tonight.

New Process:
Instead of sending an invitation through the Gmail calendar (which some folks are having an issue with) and then sending a separate “evite” to get potluck signups, etc. we will simply send an email with the link to the RSVP page for the event.  Complete the form and you are ready to go.  NOTE: THIS WILL NOT ADD THE EVENT TO YOUR CALENDAR, you will have to add it manually. On July 12th, the club had it’s second annual Summer Picnic. This year we held it at Bower’s Mansion which is half way between Reno and Carson City just off Rt. 580. We had our own pavilion right next to the playground so it was perfect for the kids to play and pass the time away. Andy Goodrich did the grilling honors again this year. The burgers, sausages and hot dogs were delicious. All the members brought salads, appetizers and desserts so we had plenty of food. The Mazuryk’s even brought some pizzas for the group. A big thank you to Sharon Goodrich for putting this all together again this year. We had 20 families show up which was a wonderful turnout.

In August we have two events which the club looks forward to each year. August 8th is the Sierra Buttes Tour/Poker Run. If you haven’t tried it yet, come join us. We end up having lunch at Longboard’s Bar & Grill at Plumas Pines Golf Resort. Andy and Sharon Goodrich are taking the lead again this year and I know they will have a nice gift for the winner of the Poker Run. On August 13th, we will have out annual Potluck meeting at our house. We had 40 members come last year and I would love to beat the record this year for member attendance so sign up and come to ArrowCreek for a great time.

I know it is a year away but BMWCCA is coming back to Monterey for the 2016 Oktoberfest in August! This is a very special Oktoberfest because it marks the 100th year of BMW. There are very good rumors that BMW is bringing over many of the classic BMW’s from their museum. Jeff Warner mentioned in our meeting a few months ago that he will be attending and would love to have many of the club members attend. Stay tuned for more information in the coming newsletters but make a mental note to try and come next year!!

The Sierra Chapter had a fun filled afternoon in the company of other BMW fans in a beautiful, historic park with plenty of lawn space. A gorgeous drive South of town with tours available through the historic Bowers Mansion (small fee), and a public pool (fee required). There were games for both children & adults alike. Food (burgers, hot dogs, buns, and water) was provided.

GAMES:  Horse shoes, 3- legged races, Assassin, and more!

About Bowers Mansion Park

Bowers Mansion Park is on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. Expansive sunny lawn areas and lots of tall shade trees make this a perfect spot for picnics. We have reserved the Washoe Pagoda.

The pool will be open from noon to 5:00 pm for public swim, (weather permitting). For more information about the pool, swimming lessons or renting the pool for an event, please call 849-0644

The recently restored Bowers Mansion is located in the center of the park and offers a rare glimpse into Nevadan life of the 1860’s. L.S. “Sandy” Bowers and his psychic wife, Eilley Oram, earned a fortune in their silver mine near Gold Hill, Nevada. They were Nevada’s first Comstock Lode millionaires. With their wealth they built a mansion in 1864 and then traveled the world to furnish it. It is now one of the most impressive restored homes in Nevada. Tours are available on weekends during the summer. Adults: $8/person and Child & Seniors $5/person.

The Visitors Center is located directly behind the Mansion. The mansion is open for guided tours. Call (775) 849-0201 to schedule a tour.

1. New Members & Membership Update (Sharon). Sharon said there were two new members this past month. They will be going on the Sierra Buttes ride.
2. Upcoming Events for 2015
   1. Potluck dinner will replace the August 13^th It will be at Pat’s place again this year.
   2. Sharon Goodrich gave an update on the Family Picnic which will be held July 12^th.
      1. Members need to bring either an appetizer, salad or dessert.

   4. The Holiday Party will be at Brick’s again this year. It will be held on December 3^rd. There will be no meeting on December 10^th.
   5. The Fall Wine Tour will be on Sept. 19^th. There are still 5 rooms available at the Shenandoah Inn. We heard that the Porsche Club is also staying there that weekend.
   6. There will be a non-BMW club event at Rennsport on July 25^th. The Porsche Club is also attending. The tech session will be on fault codes, factory level scanners, check light details and other technical information.
3. The new BMW 7 series will be arriving at Bill Pearce BMW in the late fall. We showed a video of the new features. You can use hand gestures to operate some of the features like the telephone and navigation. The 7 series can park itself and can be pulled into and out of a garage. New laser headlights can see 3 times farther than normal lights.
4. BMW has recalled 420,661 cars due to Takata defective airbags. It mostly effects 2002 thru 2006 3 and 5 series and the X5. A list was provided to the attending members.
5. BMW had a record May for sales. The 3 and 4 series along with the X5 contributed to most of the sales.
6. John Strom provided some photos of European BMW models on his 6 month tour. We showed the 525d touring car , the M135i 4 door hatchback and the 220d gran tourer.
7. BMW Trivia
   Question: What is the next i BMW ?
   Answer: The i3 and it will be coming out in 2019. It will be a four door model.
8. Q&A? Steve Polimeni said the traffic on 395 was bad at Niles exit so you should take S. Virginia to La Vecchia.

4. BMW has created an Apple Watch Remote app
   Currently the app is only for the i3 and i8. The watch can give Battery charge progress and current status of the charge. Helps with finding your car in parking lots. The watch can start the HVAC remote on hot or cold days. Remaining range is available for the battery. It can sound the horn in case of an emergency.
5. BMW NextGen 7 Series Digital Dash
   The new 7 series will have a Touch screen. Hand gestures will activate some functions.If you get a chance watch the video. It is very impressive technology.
6. The Goodrich’s European Delivery of M228i was presented by Sharon
   They were unable to visit the BMW Museum but did do the Factory tour. It was a real kick in the pants to drive on the Autobahn. They got to 120mph.They had no navigation in the new car so they got lost several times. They turned the car in at Munich and continued on to Spain and Turkey by train.
7. Jim Baubel passed away of brain cancer last Wednesday.
   Jim transferred from Sacramento chapter a year ago.He went on a few trips with the club over the past several months.  Many people knew him.A non-memorial will be held in Grass valley to celebrate his passing on Saturday. All are welcome to attend but you need to RSVP.

   2. Answer: Frozen White (matte white) It is only on the M6 right now.

   1. Jeff Whitesides presented information on wheel spacers for rims on his M3.

   1. Pat McGoff received an email from Doug Jacobs of Prospero’s Garage. He makes color coded wiring diagrams generally for old historics. Discussed the option and legality of sending out a single email blast to the club by way of advertising. Anybody who is interested can contact Pat. The diagrams are 11” X 14” and cost $20.

I hope this newsletter finds all our members enjoying a happy 2015 so far. We have some new and exciting events this year. We hope that you will check some of them out and join in on the fun. We have some new board members who have joined us for the next two years. Ron Nicasio has taken over as Vice President, replacing John English. Carol Villar will now be doing the newsletter since John and Alice Strom are taking off for Europe for six months. James Russell is our new secretary, replacing Dody Gustafson, who has been our loyal secretary almost since the club started. I have decided remain as president for another two years, and am looking forward to it. Our membership has been growing by leaps and bounds the last few years, and I believe it will keep growing with BMW coming out with more exciting models and will draw more members to our club.

This newsletter will be the first ever eNewsletter for our chapter. We know that there still are a few members who don’t have email addresses so they will still receive mailed copies. The good news is that we now have a newsletter in living color and it will not be limited by four black and white pages. I know that Carol Villar is thrilled to put this all together for the members. Since she is still our webmaster, her new position fits perfectly. We hope you enjoy the new format. Please give us some feedback, positive or negative.

Ron Nicasio and I attended the BMWCCA Congress in Dallas March 13 thru 15. The National BMWCCA has come up with some very interesting projects. I have summarized below what we can look forward to:

• BMWCCA Recognition Program to recognize individual club members, chapters, and members of the Industry for outstanding achievements and exceptional dedication.
• The BMWCCA Foundation is requesting Ambassadors from most of the chapters to educate the community and associated industries. Click here for more information on the Ambassador program.
• Jeff Cowan of the Golden Gate chapter presented ways to engage more chapter members. He mentioned their websites, Facebook page and email blasts to keep in touch with all 3700 members. Click here to view his presentation.

We got off to a slow start this year for events. Our Ski Day in February had to be cancelled due to lack of snow. Gilson Autobody had to postpone both Tech Sessions in March and April due to the sale of their company. The good news is the Virginia City Tour is happening on May 16^th so if you haven’t attended this event before, please give it a try. It’s a great ride to Lake Tahoe and then on to Virginia City for Lunch.

General Meeting:

1. Sharon Goodrich advised that there were two new members that signed up this month. We are closing in on 170 members.
2. John English gave an update on the Virginia City Tour. He said he secured the lunch site and the ride should be similar to last year with a stop and Lake Tahoe.
3. 2014/2015 X5 Recall is about the side air bags not inflating correctly.
4. BMW is making a  mouthguard for the England rugby team. The mouthguard is in the shape of the kidney grill and is make from the material that seals the doors of a BMW.
5. The 2015 30^th Anniversary M5 originally sold for $138,275 but the Roundel has one for sale for $299,000. Only 30 cars were sold in the USA so the member apparently is trying to make a windfall profit.
6. The 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid is becoming a reality. It will have a twin-power gas engine along with an electric engine. Total horsepower is 245HP. The 3 series will get an amazing 117 mpg!
7. BMW Trivia
   1. Question: How many years has BMW been making the X-series? Answer: 15. The first X was the X5. The majority of the X SAV’s were made at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

9. Pat McGoff and Ron Nicasio attended the BMW Congress this past March. The following items:

   1. BMWCCA has created a Recognition Program to award chapters and members as well as associated companies.

   2. The BMWCCA Foundation is creating an Ambassador Program that will have volunteers from chapters to explain the Foundation to the community and associated companies.

WHAT: Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Driving School

Car crashes are the leading killer of American teens from ages 15 – 20, with more than 5,000 teens involved in a fatal crash each year and an additional 196,000 injured.

Simple driving errors, avoidable but common among inexperienced teens, cause the majority of fatal accidents. Tire Rack Street Survival® is a 501c3 organization and is the largest active non-profit national driver education program that teaches teens the skills they need to stay alive behind the wheel. Unlike traditional driver’s education programs based on classroom theory and simple maneuvers, the Tire Rack Street Survival® programs improves driver competence through hands-on experiences in real-world driving situations.

Students will receive classroom sessions and then will learn, hands-on, how to manage everyday driving hazards, obstacles and challenges in a controlled environment on an advanced driving course to ultimately ‘arrive alive’.

Students learn emergency braking and skid control, how to control proper braking, and how to avoid accidents entirely. In select schools, in addition to spending time in the driver’s seat of parked 18-wheeler to fully comprehend its massive blind spots, teenagers witness the violent detonation of an air bag, which reinforces proper hand placement on the steering wheel. Students are taught in their own cars, not specially prepared program vehicles, so the skills they learn can be directly translated to their daily driving experiences. Tire Rack Street Survival® challenges teenagers to understand how to control a vehicle, rather than just operate one.

Tire Rack Street Survival® is open to licensed and permitted drivers ages 15 – 21. Forms, schedules and more information can be found online at www.streetsurvival.org.

The cost is $75 per student and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates. The program is in its 13fth year having trained almost 15,000 new drivers. 101 schools were completed last year and the goal for 2015 is over 125 nationally.

For the 6th year, Michelin North America is supporting the Street Survival program by providing funding for pavement rental for each school throughout the United States. That is no small task, given that this year the Tire Rack Street Survival schools plan to offer its training to teens all across the U.S.

 Join us for this fun joint tech session with Porsche Club…

Our plan is to have a couple of cars representing both marques, plug the cars in and scan the cars for stored as sell as active fault codes – then explain what the codes mean as well as what we can and can’t do with the Autologic scanner to turn those faults lights off (ex: the CEL – check engine light).  What parts and systems the codes point to that might need repair or replacing; as well as what kind of “real time” information a shop can get out of a factory level scanner like the ones used at Reno Rennsport.

Outline

The modern generation of factory level scanners do so much more than simply scan a car for fault codes. You can get all kinds of useful information on your car with a factory level scanner these days – and it’s how you use that information that points you to the real issue. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as just scan the car for fault codes; then replace the parts it tells you are bad….  Everything on modern cars is controlled by a complex series of modules, communication cables and sensors – and the only way to communicate with those is with a modern factory level scanner. 

Subjects

1. What does the CEL (check engine light) actually mean?  How many different faults can it be?  Everything from emission related faults (ex: your gas cap being left loose will trigger and store a fault code) to a certain part being bad or starting to go bad (like a bad coil throwing a misfire code) to serious running issues that can cause major engine damage (like your engine running too lean).
2. What kind of fault codes can be noted then cleared out, and what faults are going to need to be addressed before the car will pass a smog test (a CEL being on is an instant fail) Or to protect your engine from serious damage (ex: by running an engine slightly too lean it’s more than possible to burn a valve or piston).
3. What kind of “real time” information can you see with a scanner, and how can you use that information to diagnose an issue?
4. What kind of features (bells and whistles) on your car can you change or adjust with a factory level scanner?
5. How do all the modules in a modern car communicate with each other?  How does a bad module or cable in one location hide the real issue somewhere downstream?
6. What kinds of self-tests can you run with a scanner on your car, and what do those mean?
7. Why can’t (or why shouldn’t) I wait until the day before my registration is due, to get that CEL light turned off?  Not only to avoid major damage to your car due to a serious problem, but most cars have to go through a somewhat lengthy “drive cycle” before the monitors will reset and you can pass your emissions test.

Please join the Sierra Chapter for a fun filled afternoon in the company of other BMW fans in a beautiful, historic park with plenty of lawn space. A gorgeous drive South of town with tours available through the historic Bowers Mansion (small fee), and a public pool (fee required).

There will be games for both children & adults alike.

Food (burgers, hot dogs, buns, and water) provided.  Please bring your choice of beverage in a cooler (as no refrigeration provided), and a dish to share. Once you accept an e-vite will be sent to sign up for the dish.

BYOB Alcoholic beverages are welcome, but please be responsible.

GAMES:  Horse shoes, 3- legged races, Assassin, and more!

Bowers Mansion Park is on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. Expansive sunny lawn areas and lots of tall shade trees make this a perfect spot for picnics. We have reserved the Washoe Pagoda.

The recently restored Bowers Mansion is located in the center of the park and offers a rare glimpse into Nevadan life of the 1860’s. L.S. “Sandy” Bowers and his psychic wife, Eilley Oram, earned a fortune in their silver mine near Gold Hill, Nevada. They were Nevada’s first Comstock Lode millionaires. With their wealth they built a mansion in 1864 and then traveled the world to furnish it. It is now one of the most impressive restored homes in Nevada. Tours are available on weekends during the summer. Adults: $8/person and Child & Seniors $5/person.

About Bowers Mansion

The Bowers Mansion was built in 1863 by Lemuel “Sandy” Bowers and his wife, Eilley, and is the finest example of the homes built in Nevada by the new millionaires of the Comstock mining boom. The land originally was purchased in 1856 by Eilley and her first husband Alex Cowan, who returned to Utah a year later with other Mormon settlers. Eilley secured a divorce and moved to Gold Canyon where she ran a boarding house and later acquired the mining claim which, together with that belonging to her second husband Sandy, became the source of their fortune. The mansion was the fulfillment of Eilley’s dreams of prestige and respectability. The mansion, designed by J. Neeley Johnson, a builder and ex-governor of California, combined Georgian and Italianate architectural styles. It was modeled after a design conceived by Eilley based on her recollection of elegant buildings in her native Scotland. Indeed, the Bowers employed stonecutters from Scotland for the construction of their new home, which eventually cost $400,000 to build, an exorbitant sum in the 1860s. Eilley and Sandy toured Europe from 1861 to 1863, purchasing furniture, statuary, painting and other adornments for their home.

Following the death of Sandy Bowers in 1868, Eilley fell on hard financial times and finally lost her precious home to foreclosure. The mansion was abandoned by the time Henry Riter acquired it and operated it as a resort until 1946. The building is currently owned and operated by the Washoe County Parks Department. Some 500 Nevada families have donated period furniture housed in the mansion. The park blends the historical site with recreational facilities such as a spring-fed swimming pool, picnic areas, and a playground. Tours of the mansion are given in summer and autumn.

Sky Tavern’s annual car show, Kars for Kids, is Sunday, September 13^th. We would love to see your car club represented. The club with the most cars exhibiting wins $1000.00 donated by a local sponsor! Flat 4s took it home last year. Get your club to rally and boost that treasury!

Sky Tavern is a non-profit regional center providing exceptional summer and winter sports training, competitions, recreation and events, accessible to all. Since 1948 we have been teaching kids to ski and snowboard. Maybe you learned here. Now we are becoming a year round center with mountain biking, summer camps, weddings, and concerts. Sky Tavern is no longer a part of the City of Reno and relies on fund raising events to get kids off the couch, away from video games and moving outside. Please help.

Please join us for a day of live music, zipline, ski lift chair rides, fantastic raffle prizes, an exciting live auction plus great food and beautiful cars!

The primary emphasis of the Tire Rack Street Survival® is a “hands-on” driving experience in real-world situations! We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves. They will understand why they should always wear their own seatbelts, and why they should insist that their passengers wear seatbelts, too.

9:00am – Starbucks/Raleys Parking Lot, 1^st poker card draw Head-up Mt Rose Hwy (NV-431) over the summit, right on NV/CA-28 past Kings Beach .  Turn right on CA-267 (N Shore Road) towards Truckee, CA for approx 10.3 miles.  Turn Left on Brockway Road through roundabouts for approx. 1.0 mile to Truckee River Regional Park for potty break and 2^nd poker card draw.

10:00am – Leave TRR Park turning right on Brockway road, turns to Bridge St.  Right on Donner Pass Road until roundabout on CA-89.  Travel approx. 23 miles to Sierraville and then left on CA-49, stop at highway turnout immediately after Sierraville for pictures and 3^rd poker card. Continue 4.7 miles past Sattley.  Continue, this is the fun part! – 12.6 miles of dangerous curves, to Bassets (gas station/small store and highway maintenance station). Will draw the 4^th poker card at Bassets parking lot.

11:00am – Leave Bassets turning onto Gold Lake Hwy (CR-S620), travel approx. 7.6 miles to Gold Lake for pictures then continue for 15.4 miles to CA-89, entering Graeagle.  Turn left on CA-89 for approx. 1.7 miles to Graeagle-Johnsville Road.  Travel approx. 1.6 miles to Poplar Valley Road, turn right and travel straight to Plumas Pines Golf Course/ Longboards Bar and Grill for lunch! …and final poker card draw and prize award!). Lunch will be The Bluff with glorious views and delicious food.

The menu choices for the $17.00 choices to include tax, tip & iced tea or coffee:

Grilled Chicken Sandwich on house-made ciabatta roll, served with Caesar salad or house-cut French fries
