Either way, the interest level is there because we have great adventures and it gives us great stories to share.  That’s pretty much what we’re about.  Yes, we do nice things in the community.  Yes, we circle the wagons around our love of the brand.  But also, and more than anything, it’s about the adventures that we get to have as friends through this organization. 

Kudos to all those that help to organize our events/outings.  I’m always amazed and proud of the way that our outings play out.  Never any issues related to the personalities, never anything out of the ordinary or unplanned.  Just well organized, planned, and implemented.  And that’s awesome.  

My day job is working with service related companies here in Reno related to their online marketing.  There’s nothing like trying to write sales copy for a Reno plumbing company all day.  Not exactly the most exciting thing to write about.  So when I need a break from it, I can either jump in my little 335i and go for a drive, or visit our website and smile while I reminisce about our adventures.

So my point is this (about membership).  It’s really easy to talk up this club.  We are a big club because of our great people.  Kudos to all the leadership for their contributions!

LAPD picks BMW i3 over Tesla Model S: Here’s why

The Los Angeles Police Department will buy 100 BMW i3 electric cars for non-emergency use. The LAPD announced plans for this order last year, when it took delivery of an i3 and a Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] Model S for testing. It turns out officers preferred the i3.

Because of the late hour, parking lot tickets were no longer available. Eddy’s thought was to show the car in the original 2002 class as there was an opening. Having done nothing to prep the car at this point and it was the Tuesday, panic mode set in. As one can imagine I have commitments to several other Historic Week events, so  I really didn’t have any time to do anything before Friday of the event.

My turbo was used by BMW to be apart of the M2 launch at the Detroit Auto Show in January and the Press Familiarization sessions at Laguna Seca Raceway in February. It was a hoot all around. Here is the launch video

This is a golden moment. I was a guest of BMW for this event and it was a wow! experience.

This is what the floor looked like after the Press Conference launching the X4M401 and the M2. There were more people most of the day checking out my turbo than the M2…

And then just before the Press Familiarization at Laguna Seca there was a whole day doing laps in formation behind a camera car for video and still frame shots. Here is the composite video:

BMW constructed a 60×40 temporary building for lunch and work between sessions. They filled it with these guys:

At the lunch breaks the BMW Group M Brand PR guy, BenjaminTitz made sure I had great companions like Bill Aberlin, Tomo Glock, Augusto Farfus, Antonio da Costa and Martin Tomczyk. The last four were taking a break from their DTM Teams’ preseason testing  at Catalonia.

I also interviewed with numerous magazine reporters from the likes of Auto Bild and Auto Week among others about the turbo. On the second press day our venerable Roundel Editor, Satch Carlson, shows his best:

I am a Sierra Chapter member and I am organizing an inaugural event that we are calling the “High Sierra 02 Fest” that will take place September 12^th and 13^th 2015, in Minden.  This will be an event only for 2002’s, and is not a BMWCCA sanctioned event.  It is posted on the 2002FAQ website, but I am trying to spread the word to as many 02 owners as I can.  If you know of any members, other than myself that own 2002’s, I would be very appreciative if you could make them aware of our event.  As I said, it is posted on the 2002FAQ site on the events page, but they can also contact me at adirtnerd@frontier.com for information.

Events Details

You are invited to join us at the inaugural High Sierra 02 Fest to be held September 12, 2015 at Minden, Nevada.  This will be a free event, with the only cost for participants being lodging. 

The event will begin on the evening of Friday September 11^th, with check in at the Carson Valley Inn Casino, and an informal meet and greet dinner.  Activities on Saturday, September 12^th will include a morning drive that will take us through the picturesque Carson Valley and up into the nearby roads of the East Slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe, providing a great driving venue for our cars, photo ops, and a chance to enjoy our cars and each other.  In the afternoon we will have a car show, barbeque and a tech session presented by Jack Fahuna. 

For those who have the time, we will also have a Sunday morning loop drive through the mountains, that will provide opportunities for any driver that wants to, to break off and head home at their conveneince. 

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Carson Valley Inn motor lodge for $85 per night, double occupancy.  These are nice rooms, located on the first floor, which will let you park your car right outside your door.  In order to make your room reservation, please call 800-321-6983 ext. 1 and mention group number 504254.  This will guarantee you the $85 rate.  You need to make your reservation before August 1, 2015, as any rooms not reserved by that time will be released. 

There are no other charges to attend this event.  The intent is to keep this a low key event, letting 02 owners get together to enjoy each other’s cars and company, therefore we have set a limit of 20 cars/lodging rooms for this first year.  If you are planning on attending, please handle the room reservations on your own, and please contact Ed Blake at adirtnerd@frontier.com to confirm your participation and let me know how many people will accompany you, or if you have any questions regarding the event.  I am working on a design for T-shirts, and will contact those signed up for the event with information regarding cost and order information, for those that may be interested.  We feel that the Carson Valley area, just 20 minutes east of Lake Tahoe provides a great venue for enjoying our cars, and hope to see you there.

CURRENTLY WE ARE STORING, SELLING, AND DONATING LOTS OF THINGS WHICH NEED WEEDING OUT IN THIS HOUSE FOR WHEN WE DO HEAD WEST. CURRENTLY I AM PREPARING A HOUSE LOT, NO HOUSE ON IT YET, IN THE BERKELEY HILLS NEAR THE CALDICOT TUNNEL BETWEEN BERKELEY AND OAKLAND ON THE ORIGINAL “TUNNEL ROAD” FOR SALE. IT IS NEAR THE ROCKRIDGE B.A.R.T. STOP.

SO WE WILL BE AROUND AND HOPE TO ATTEND SOME MORE OF OUR WONDERFUL CLUBS EVENTS EVEN THOUGH OUR SCHEDULE WILL MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO ATTEND EVERYTHING WE’D LIKE TO. THE OL’ BEEMER

OUR FAMILY CARRIAGE WAS LOANED TO GEORGE AND MARTHA WASHINGTON FOR HIS SECOND TERM IN OFFICE AND IT IS STILL ON “LOAN” TO THEIR ESTATE. I’VE SEEN IT AND WAS VERY HAPPY TO SEE THE POWEL CREST IS STILL ON THE CARRIAGE WHICH IS STILL IN IT’S ORIGINAL SHAPE AND COLOR SINCE THE 1700s.

I EVEN TEASED THE WOMAN WHO AS THE MT. VERNON SITE MANAGER ONCE ABOUT WONDERING WHEN THE
“LOANER CARRIAGE” WAS GOING TO BE RETURNED TO THE POWEL HOUSE IN PHILLY WHICH IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FROM THURSDAYS THROUGH SUNDAYS. IT IS NEAR THE LIBERTY BELL AND ALSO ABOUT 3 INCHES FROM THE HOUSE OF ONE OF WILLIAM PENN’S GRANDSON’S IN THIRD STREET.

THE POWEL HOUSE HAS THE HONOR OF BEING CONSIDERED THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF PHILADELPHIA GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE IN THE REGION. IF YOU DO GO TO SEE IT ALSO INCLUDE A MEAL IN THE “COLONIAL INN” RESTAURANT WHERE THE FOUNDING FATHERS HAD TIMES TOGETHER JUST AS THEY HAD AT THE “DELICIOUSLY DECADENT” ONES HOSTED AT THE POWEL HOUSE IN THOSE TURBULENT TIMES.

I was awarded the Best of Class, Original 2002 and the “Max” which the best of BMW Marque for 2011. I included a picture of the best of each marque too. The Mercedes in the center won Best of Show. Hopefully these pictures may be useful for the website or the newsletter. BTW, Gilbert has participated in this event in the past and has one class awards too. He may be able to provide pictures as well.

Preregistration is nice but late comers are always welcome. There are 2 main meeting places / times. The first is 10AM at the Raley’s / Starbucks at Galena Junction. The next is 11:15 at the Starbucks in Incline.

In between those 2 spots we will be stopping about 10:30 at the picturesque turn out just past the meadows on top of Mt Rose. That’s where our best photo op will be. It’s the same spot where the homepage photo was taken last year.(red cars to the back this time!)

After coming back down from the lake we will make a quick stop in Carson to add a few people to the parade.

The last leg is Hwy 50 to 341 and up the truck route into Virginia City. Lunch is at the Palace restaurant around 12:30

Cost is lunch plus $5 per person to cover the club insurance. We hope to see you there!
