If you didn’t join us for this fun joint tech session with Porsche Club,
here’s what happened…

Our plan is to have a couple of cars representing both marques, plug the cars in and scan the cars for stored as sell as active fault codes – then explain what the codes mean as well as what we can and can’t do with the Autologic scanner to turn those faults lights off (ex: the CEL – check engine light). What parts and systems the codes point to that might need repair or replacing; as well as what kind of “real time” information a shop can get out of a factory level scanner like the ones used at Reno Rennsport.

Outline

The modern generation of factory level scanners do so much more than simply scan a car for fault codes. You can get all kinds of useful information on your car with a factory level scanner these days – and it’s how you use that information that points you to the real issue. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as just scan the car for fault codes; then replace the parts it tells you are bad…. Everything on modern cars is controlled by a complex series of modules, communication cables and sensors – and the only way to communicate with those is with a modern factory level scanner.

Subjects

What does the CEL (check engine light) actually mean? How many different faults can it be? Everything from emission related faults (ex: your gas cap being left loose will trigger and store a fault code) to a certain part being bad or starting to go bad (like a bad coil throwing a misfire code) to serious running issues that can cause major engine damage (like your engine running too lean).

What kind of fault codes can be noted then cleared out, and what faults are going to need to be addressed before the car will pass a smog test (a CEL being on is an instant fail) Or to protect your engine from serious damage (ex: by running an engine slightly too lean it’s more than possible to burn a valve or piston).

What kind of “real time” information can you see with a scanner, and how can you use that information to diagnose an issue?

What kind of features (bells and whistles) on your car can you change or adjust with a factory level scanner?

How do all the modules in a modern car communicate with each other? How does a bad module or cable in one location hide the real issue somewhere downstream?

What kinds of self-tests can you run with a scanner on your car, and what do those mean?

Why can’t (or why shouldn’t) I wait until the day before my registration is due, to get that CEL light turned off? Not only to avoid major damage to your car due to a serious problem, but most cars have to go through a somewhat lengthy “drive cycle” before the monitors will reset and you can pass your emissions test.

This is a non-sanctioned BMWCCA Event

Hi,

I am a Sierra Chapter member and I am organizing an inaugural event that we are calling the “High Sierra 02 Fest” that will take place September 12th and 13th 2015, in Minden. This will be an event only for 2002’s, and is not a BMWCCA sanctioned event. It is posted on the 2002FAQ website, but I am trying to spread the word to as many 02 owners as I can. If you know of any members, other than myself that own 2002’s, I would be very appreciative if you could make them aware of our event. As I said, it is posted on the 2002FAQ site on the events page, but they can also contact me at adirtnerd@frontier.com for information.

Thank you very much in advance for any assistance that you can provide!

Ed Blake

Events Details

You are invited to join us at the inaugural High Sierra 02 Fest to be held September 12, 2015 at Minden, Nevada. This will be a free event, with the only cost for participants being lodging.

The event will begin on the evening of Friday September 11th, with check in at the Carson Valley Inn Casino, and an informal meet and greet dinner. Activities on Saturday, September 12th will include a morning drive that will take us through the picturesque Carson Valley and up into the nearby roads of the East Slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe, providing a great driving venue for our cars, photo ops, and a chance to enjoy our cars and each other. In the afternoon we will have a car show, barbeque and a tech session presented by Jack Fahuna.

For those who have the time, we will also have a Sunday morning loop drive through the mountains, that will provide opportunities for any driver that wants to, to break off and head home at their conveneince.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Carson Valley Inn motor lodge for $85 per night, double occupancy. These are nice rooms, located on the first floor, which will let you park your car right outside your door. In order to make your room reservation, please call 800-321-6983 ext. 1 and mention group number 504254. This will guarantee you the $85 rate. You need to make your reservation before August 1, 2015, as any rooms not reserved by that time will be released.

There are no other charges to attend this event. The intent is to keep this a low key event, letting 02 owners get together to enjoy each other’s cars and company, therefore we have set a limit of 20 cars/lodging rooms for this first year. If you are planning on attending, please handle the room reservations on your own, and please contact Ed Blake at adirtnerd@frontier.com to confirm your participation and let me know how many people will accompany you, or if you have any questions regarding the event. I am working on a design for T-shirts, and will contact those signed up for the event with information regarding cost and order information, for those that may be interested. We feel that the Carson Valley area, just 20 minutes east of Lake Tahoe provides a great venue for enjoying our cars, and hope to see you there.

Note: This is a non-BMWCCA sanctioned event

WHAT: Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Driving School
WHERE: Reno-Stead Airport, 4895 Texas Ave, Reno, NV 89506
WHEN: Saturday, March 14th; 8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Car crashes are the leading killer of American teens from ages 15 – 20, with more than 5,000 teens involved in a fatal crash each year and an additional 196,000 injured.

Simple driving errors, avoidable but common among inexperienced teens, cause the majority of fatal accidents. Tire Rack Street Survival® is a 501c3 organization and is the largest active non-profit national driver education program that teaches teens the skills they need to stay alive behind the wheel. Unlike traditional driver’s education programs based on classroom theory and simple maneuvers, the Tire Rack Street Survival® programs improves driver competence through hands-on experiences in real-world driving situations.

Students will receive classroom sessions and then will learn, hands-on, how to manage everyday driving hazards, obstacles and challenges in a controlled environment on an advanced driving course to ultimately ‘arrive alive’.

Students learn emergency braking and skid control, how to control proper braking, and how to avoid accidents entirely. In select schools, in addition to spending time in the driver’s seat of parked 18-wheeler to fully comprehend its massive blind spots, teenagers witness the violent detonation of an air bag, which reinforces proper hand placement on the steering wheel. Students are taught in their own cars, not specially prepared program vehicles, so the skills they learn can be directly translated to their daily driving experiences. Tire Rack Street Survival® challenges teenagers to understand how to control a vehicle, rather than just operate one.

Tire Rack Street Survival® is open to licensed and permitted drivers ages 15 – 21. Forms, schedules and more information can be found online at www.streetsurvival.org.

The cost is $75 per student and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates. The program is in its 13fth year having trained almost 15,000 new drivers. 101 schools were completed last year and the goal for 2015 is over 125 nationally.

For the 6th year, Michelin North America is supporting the Street Survival program by providing funding for pavement rental for each school throughout the United States. That is no small task, given that this year the Tire Rack Street Survival schools plan to offer its training to teens all across the U.S.

WHEN: Saturday, July 25th, 9:00am @ Reno Rennsport, 6 Cal Ln #2, Sparks, NV 89431

Join us for this fun joint tech session with Porsche Club…

Calling all Car Clubs!

Sky Tavern’s annual car show, Kars for Kids, is Sunday, September 13th. We would love to see your car club represented. The club with the most cars exhibiting wins $1000.00 donated by a local sponsor! Flat 4s took it home last year. Get your club to rally and boost that treasury!

Sky Tavern is a non-profit regional center providing exceptional summer and winter sports training, competitions, recreation and events, accessible to all. Since 1948 we have been teaching kids to ski and snowboard. Maybe you learned here. Now we are becoming a year round center with mountain biking, summer camps, weddings, and concerts. Sky Tavern is no longer a part of the City of Reno and relies on fund raising events to get kids off the couch, away from video games and moving outside. Please help.

Please join us for a day of live music, zipline, ski lift chair rides, fantastic raffle prizes, an exciting live auction plus great food and beautiful cars!

Come on up to Sky Tavern. It is always cooler than the valley, the setting is beautiful and the cause is local kids. Gates open at 8am. $25 registration includes lunch.

Thank you for your support!

Greetings Sierra Chapter,

As you can see, there are a couple changes to the annual (so far) Gilson’s Kars for Kids Show and Shine charity event. Things are just too busy around the Gilson shop in Sparks, so we have moved the location… AND WE HAVE CHANGED THE DATE.

NEW LOCATION: Ski Tavern Ski Lodge on Mt Rose Highway

NEW DATE: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7th; Gate opens for display cars @ 8AM This is the week BEFORE the Amador trip and will have your car(s) clean for that one!

NEW ATTRACTIONS: The Chair Lift and Zip Line will be running for a nominal fee.

NOT NEW: Price to display is $25 and includes lunch; spectators are free

NOT NEW: $1,000 cash handed to the club with the most cars on display

Okay, here’s some inside info for us Bimmerhead’s: Last year the Chevy club won the $1k with only 26 cars. C’MON… let’s shake the bushes and show up with 40. No really, if each of the “regular attenders” to the monthly club meeting calls JUST ONE Bimmer Buddy, we’re there. No cheating, you have to call someone who isn’t normally there! And YES, you can display more than one car if you wish. I’ll offer up the idea that at least part of this booty be spent on the Christmas party and/or another club event.

Cheers,

Jeff Warner, Your Janitor
Driving Events

It’s hard to believe but the Eids of May are almost upon us. Most people are unfamiliar with this lesser Roman festival as it was oft overshadowed by the Eids of March. As we all know the Eids of March were actually a pre Roman New Year celebration centered around the God Jupiter and had little to do with Caesar’s assassination until Bill Shakespeare tied the two together. But following the Eids of March every year in Rome on the first Saturday in May the Roman’s held a great Via Coetus to celebrate the great military campaign launched by the Roman General Humongous Schlung. General Schlung led a bold and gallant cavalry charge of 10,000 chariots overland in an attempt to crush the defiant Persians in one swift action. Unfortunately, Schlung and his band of charioteers were never heard from again and apparently never reached the Persian Empire. In fact, no trace of the massive military unit has ever been found. All we are left with today are the little known and celebrated Roman holiday and the last words of General Humongous Schlung, “Orbis Terrarum Loco Systemati Sunt Pro Retardatae!”

So it is in the spirit of the ancient Romans that we celebrate the Eids of May with our own Via Coetus to be held on Saturday May 4th, 2013 (MMXIII).

The Start will take place at the C&C Automotive, Sierra Auto Sport, Sierra Invisible Shield Building at 1645 Crane Way in Sparks. Sign in from 7:45 to 8:15 AM, rules meeting at 8:15 sharp.

Entry Fee; $37 per car and includes prizes and a pretty decent lunch in a comfortable setting. Prize money will be awarded if we cover our expenses.

Format: A very beginner level Time Speed and Distance (TSD) or more appropriately Tempus Velocitas et Distantia

2 Elective classifications; SOP and unequipped. SOP stands for “Seat of the Pants” which means you intend to wing it the whole way with no equipment or preparation. Unequipped means, you can only use the speedometer and odometer installed in your car, speed tables and a watch. All appropriate speed tables will be provided for those who are interested. Calculators will be allowed but scoffed at. Slide rules and TSD speed scales will not only be allowed, but we will just hand you the trophy if you show up with one and you know how to use it. The real rallyist will use an analog watch, but digital watches and stop watches are perfectly acceptable. No cars may use rally computers, computers or programmable calculators of any kind. NO GPS!

Recommended equipment: Three pencils, a clip board, a watch, a calculator. You may also need some spending money, chewing gum, left over Easter candy and a postage stamp.

WHEN: Saturday, March 16th, 2013
LOCATION: Reno-Stead Airport, 4895 Texas Ave Reno, NV

It’s about more than driving – it’s about LIVING!
The primary emphasis of the Tire Rack Street Survival® is a “hands-on” driving experience in real-world situations! We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in. They will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves. They will understand why they should always wear their own seatbelts, and why they should insist that their passengers wear seatbelts, too.
