Come join us for a beautiful ride and Poker Run through Nevada and California. The gamble is whether the weather will cooperate. If Monitor Pass is closed we have an alternative beautiful route. If raining or snowing in the mountains, just lunch and poker in Red’s Old 395 Grill in Carson City.

Red’s is a cozy spot for hand-cut steaks, ribs & Buffalo wings alongside over 100 beers from around the world.

Monitor Pass and Poker Run

Begin at Raley’s on Wedge Parkway (first card draw). Head south on old 395 to junction of freeway in north Carson City and proceed south to junction of 395 in south Carson City. Turn onto Jack’s Valley Road to Genoa. Potty stop at Mormon Station (second card draw). Proceed south to junction of Hwy 88 turn right and proceed to Hwy 89 left to Markleeville. There is an airport rest area with no facilities, regroup for 15 minutes (third card draw). Proceed through Markleeville to the junction to Monitor Pass. Stop at the top of pass at the rest area for another short stop (fourth card draw). Go to the bottom of the pass to the junction of US 395. Stop there for a short stop (fifth card draw). Turn left on US 395 and proceed to Carson City and lunch at Red’s Old 395. This is the last stop and where we have lunch. See mapped route below:

After everyone has had a chance to order and are settled we will present the prizes for High Hand and Low Hand (to make it interesting).

We meet on the second Thursday of each month @ Bill Pearce BMW, 11555 S. Virginia in Reno. The meetings start @ 6PM, but feel free to show up early to talk cars or just drool over the new stuff in the showroom.
After our meetings end (~7 PM) many of us head out to dinner at a local restaurant.

MINUTES

The meeting was called to order by Lance Taylor -Warren, President, on June 10^th, at 6:05 p.m. at the BMW dealership. There were 18 members present. Lance welcomed everyone back after so many months without meeting because of COVID-19. He then introduced the new slate of Club officers.

BMW BRIEFS by Pat McGoff

The Chinese-spec 5 Series comes exclusively with the stretched wheel base. It is the same model as appears in U.S. except the wheel base is 5 inches longer as Chinese customers prefer more rear legroom. Motor1.com/news

BMW will spend $20 million building a new 67,000 square foot training center in South Carolina to be completed by mid 2022. The center will also house the apprenticeship program known as BMW scholars.

2021 4 Series convertibles start at $54K. No manual gear shifts. Horsepower runs from 255 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque for the 4 cylinder to 382 HP and 369 lb-ft of torque for the 6 cylinder.

BMW tops the list of U.S. auto exporters, exporting 218,820 vehicles. The top destination of exported vehicles is China which sees 23.3% of the exported vehicles. BMW car club magazine May 2021.

BMW is building more electric drive motors ahead of full scale i4 and iX production at Dingolfing plant. Plans are to produce 500,000 electric drivetrains annually starting in 2022. bimmerlife.com/2021.

The U.S. market launch for the i4, iX, and an M Performance iX was during the first quarter of 2021. Current BMW electrified vehicles are the iX xDrive50, the i4 eDrive40, and the i4 M50. bimmerlife.com/2021/06//05.

BMW is now making batteries at 3 sites in Germany and expect at least 50% of delivered vehicles to be fully electric by 2030.

MEMBERSHIP by Fred Watson

The Sierra chapter membership currently is 112 members and 138 including associates. There were 2 new members, 4 renewing members, and 3 lapsed members in past month. Fred is going to send “come on back” emails to former members. Fred has also placed club brochures in 2 additional sites that service BMWs.

TRIVIA by Pat McGoff

QUESTION: What car models have most drivers arrested for DUI?

ANSWER: Dodge Ram 2500 pickup. BMW 4 Series are 3rd on top 10 list of DUI arrests and 7 Series drivers are 7th.

GIFT OPPORTUNITY

Lance is sponsoring a drawing as part of the initiative to enroll new members. A drawing for a $50 gift certificate will be held at the Holiday Party in December. Current members will receive one entry in the drawing for each new member recruited.

Seasons Greetings Sierra Chapter,

For this months Second Saturday Drive we are going to try something different. Instead of doing a daytime drive as we’ve done throughout the year, we are going to do an evening Holiday Lights Tour.

Our exact route is still being planned out, but the goal is to drive through a few of the local areas where there is heavy light decoration participation by the residents. Hidden Valley is defiantly on the list, but a few others are being looked into. If you know of an area that is worth seeing, please let me know ASAP.

So our meetup and departure plans are as follows:  Meet at the Raley’s O-N-E Market on Wedge Parkway (as has become the usual starting point at) at 4:30pm and we will depart round 5:00pm to begin the tour. Not sure what the temperatures will be like, but for those with convertibles, I encourage you to bring them for the full topless holiday lights tour experience.

So bring a thermos of your favorite hot beverage(s) and join us for a fun evening drive. I look forward to seeing you on the drive and/or at our Holiday Party this Thursday for those that RSVP’d.

Also, this Sunday is the rescheduled Family Picnic at the Galena Creek Park Bearmat Group area, if you have RSVP’d to attend, I look forward to seeing you there. If you have not RSVP’d and would like to attend, please RSVP as soon as possible so we can get an accurate headcount again for the food purchases.

Now on to this months Drive. We are going to leave from our usual starting spot of the Raley’s ONE Market on Wedge Parkway in South Reno. As is customary, gathering starts at 9:30am, departure promptly at 10:00am. Due to the two active fires in the area (and the source of all of our smoke woes), we are going to head north east to Gerlach, NV to have lunch at Bruno’s Country Club. Our route will take us along Veterans Parkway North till it turns into Sparks Blvd on the north side of Interstate-80 and then continue on Sparks Blvd until it connects with Pyramid Hwy. Once on Pyramid Hwy we will revisit part of our Pyramid Lake Drive from a few months back and continue to the lake and then east toward Nixon and finally North on NV 447 to Gerlach.
